Rolling in Flavor: Cinnamon Roll Masterclass

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (for filling)
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar (for filling)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon (for filling)
  • For the icing:
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2-3 tablespoons milk

Step 1: Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk (about 110°F) and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.

Step 3: Combine Wet Ingredients: Add the softened butter and egg to the dry ingredients. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.

Step 4: Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Form the dough into a ball.

Step 5: First Rise: Place the dough ball in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.

Step 6: Prepare the Filling: In a small bowl, mix together melted butter, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon to create the filling.

Step 7: Roll out the Dough: After the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 8: Fill and Roll: Spread the cinnamon filling evenly over the rolled-out dough. Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal-sized pieces.

Step 9: Second Rise: Place the cut rolls into a greased baking dish, leaving some space between each roll. Cover the dish with a kitchen towel and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes.

Step 10: Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once the rolls have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 11: Prepare the Icing: While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by mixing powdered sugar, softened butter, vanilla extract, and milk in a bowl until smooth.

Step 12: Ice the Rolls: Once the rolls are out of the oven and slightly cooled, drizzle the icing over the top of the warm rolls.

Step 13: Serve and Enjoy: Serve the cinnamon rolls warm and enjoy the gooey, cinnamon-filled goodness!
